How to Fix NZBGet Authentication Errors

If NZBGet is returning authentication errors when connecting to UsenetServer, this guide will help identify the issue and outline steps to restore access to Usenet.

Step 1: Check Your Username and Password

Make sure the login credentials used in NZBGet are accurate. A mismatch in the username or password is one of the most common causes of authentication errors.

  1. Open NZBGet in your Web interface.

  2. Go to Settings > News-Servers.

  3. Locate the server entry for your Usenet provider.

  4. Double-check the Username and Password fields. These should match exactly with your provider’s login details.

If you've recently changed your Usenet provider password, make sure to update it in NZBGet as well.

Step 2: Remove and Reinstall the Server Entry

If testing the connection doesn't help, it may be useful to remove the server entry and create it again from scratch:

  1. Go to Settings > News-Servers.

  2. Select the entry associated with your Usenet provider.

  1. Click Delete Server X to remove the server configuration.

  1. Click Add Server to create a new server entry.

  2. Enter the hostname, port, encryption settings, username, and password as provided by your Usenet provider.

  3. Save your changes.

This step helps rule out any misconfiguration or corruption in the previous entry.

Step 3: Test the Connection

After making any changes:

  1. Click Test Connection (if available) at the bottom of the server configuration.

  1. NZBGet should confirm a successful connection.

If the error persists, move to the next step.

Step 4: Reboot NZBGet

Sometimes, a quick restart is enough to refresh the configuration:

  1. Stop NZBGet from your Web interface or system service.

  2. Start it again and attempt to connect to Usenet.

Step 5: Review Logs for Details

NZBGet keeps detailed logs that may point to the exact cause of the error:

  1. Go to Messages in the NZBGet interface.

  1. Look for recent error messages containing "authentication failed," "login error," or related phrases.

These logs can help identify whether the issue lies with the Usenet provider or the Indexer.
